Au cours de l’été 2022, un certain trio changeait de formule : après ses quatre premiers volumes d’ESSAIS marqués par les personnalités de Sylvain Romano à la contrebasse et de Tony Rabeson à la batterie, Pierre de Bethmann remplaçait ce dernier, momentanément indisponible, par Nelson Veras, exceptionnel guitariste qui contribuait à un changement radical du son de l’orchestre.
Une idée en revanche ne changeait pas : celle d’explorer sans relâche un répertoire piochant au fond de traditions musicales les plus diverses.
Et quelque part au pied des Cévennes, au sein du studio Recall de Philippe Gaillot où le trio avait ses habitudes, une session de fin juillet 2022 créait l’album ESSAIS / VOLUME 5 qui paraissait début 2023, suivi de plus de 25 concerts sur la saison.
De cette même session particulièrement féconde, enregistrée sur le système analogique Clasp au plus proche des conditions de concert (les trois musiciens dans une même pièce, sans casque), sont issus les morceaux de ce VOLUME 6 : huit nouveaux titres de huit compositeurs et compositrices ayant marqué le parcours et la culture du trio.
Ainsi, parallèlement aux récents albums CREDO et AGAPÉ autour de compositions personnelles, la série des ESSAIS continue-t-elle, illustrant par ce titre le caractère toujours évolutif du grand répertoire, autant que l’incertitude qui semble intimement liée à la démarche de l’improvisateur.
During the summer of 2022, a certain trio changed its formula: after its first four volumes of ESSAIS, marked by the personalities of Sylvain Romano on double bass and Tony Rabeson on drums, Pierre de Bethmann replaced the latter, who was temporarily unavailable, with Nelson Veras, an exceptional guitarist who contributed to a radical change in the orchestra’s sound.
One idea, however, remained unchanged: that of relentlessly exploring a repertoire drawing on the most diverse musical traditions.
And somewhere at the foot of the Cévennes, in Philippe Gaillot’s Recall studio, where the trio was in its element, a session at the end of July 2022 resulted in the album ESSAIS / VOLUME 5, which was released in early 2023, followed by more than 25 concerts over the season.
From this same particularly fruitful session, recorded on the Clasp analog system in conditions as close as possible to those of a concert (the three musicians in the same room, without headphones), came the tracks on this VOLUME 6: eight new titles by eight composers who have marked the trio’s career and culture.
Thus, alongside the recent albums CREDO and AGAPÉ, which feature personal compositions, the ESSAIS series continues, illustrating with this title the ever-evolving nature of the great repertoire, as well as the uncertainty that seems intimately linked to the improviser’s approach.
